In a clockwork orange the droogs are acting out of pure boredom, conformity to an otherwise dull life too excruciating to bear. Their actions are disgusting and unforgivable, but one can understand that it’s the only thing that they can get pleasure from. Being a teenager in a world that offers only one direction, that expects only one life from you, is completely unbearable. Being bored is one of the most painful and depressing things a child can feel. I’ve known teenagers who have hallucinated dogs and run away from home but still only wish there was some sort of fucking culture around, something creative to do or people to meet that weren’t conforming to the same thing as everyone else. Uninspiring lives create a sense of helplessness, something that the teenagers in if… and a clockwork orange are willing to do anything to escape.
